A: Keep the air filter and purchase a pipe to connect it to your existing air intake pipe that goes to your air box.

Q: How does the turbo work on a 2000 volvo s40? If it does not work, does it affect the rest of the engine?
I just recently bought a 2000 volvo s40 and I was wondering if anyone knows how the turbo works. It doesn't seem to be THAT fast of a car, but it seems to go faster at higher RPMs. I also read somewhere that it is a low pressure turbo. Might that have something to do with it? Also, if the turbo on one of these cars does not work, does it affect the rest of the engine?

A: Engines work by combusting fuel - the two elements to that are oxygen and gasoline. Oxygen is the limiting factor in the reaction. This has the effect of both robbing the engine of potential power and emitting more polutants (CO, for instance). A turbocharger is a fan that forces more air, and consequently more oxygen into the cylinder. The fan is turned by exhaust gases; at low engine speeds, exhaust gas flow is low and fan interia is high, so the fan turns slowly, and the turbocharger does little, if anything at all. This is what is referred to as turbo lag, and is perfectly normal. Some manufacturers use 2 smaller fans which are easier to get turning to reduce this lag. What you are describing - a seemingly exponential increase in power as RPM climb - is perfectly normal. One downside to turbocharging is that the entire engine is under pressure. This takes a toll on all the seals and hoses. The more air that is forced into the engine, the greater power that can be achieved. Turbo engines that run closer to the edge of blowing out hoses, etc are high pressure turbos. Typically a low pressure turbo, like yours will run around 7 psi over atmostpheric pressure. Typically, you'll hear an increasingly loud whining sound from the turbos before they go kaput. If the fans do seize, you're basically back to running a normally aspirated engine, albeit with a somewhat restricted air intake. Your biggest problem will be that the fuel injection system is programmed for the turbos, so you're going to be running rich and emitting a lot more incompletely combusted fuel, and you may wind up ruining your cats (which are expensive to replace).

Q: How to Disassemble the Center Console on a Volvo S40/V40?
I have a 2001 Volvo S40. The cigarette lighter (12V Power Outlet) broke on my center console. It just dropped into the whole where it was sitting on. I might have pushed it too hard. I managed to pull it back, but something broke off and if I push it a little harder it will go back again. I would like to fix it somehow permanently, but I couldn't take apart the center console. A step by step instruction would be really helpful. Thanks in advance!

A: email me and i can send you step by step instructions

Q: How do I disassemble the center console and door handles for my 2006 volvo s40?
I currently have the faux wood center console and interior door handles on my 2006 volvo S40 and bought the aluminum versions. Does anyone have instructions to uninstall the old and install the new set? The dealer said it would cost me $250 to do it.....that is as much as the panels!

A: More often than not, labor is contingent on knowledge rather than skill.

Q: Are Volvo S40 Indicators meant to auto cancel?
Hello, just bought a Volvo S40 - very happy with it except one thing. The indicator stalk doesn't seem to return to the "Off" position when you turn the wheel, is this a feature or a problem? It's a low mileage car, and has been well looked after. If it IS broken, is it simple to fix?

A: yes and a simple and easy fix, cheap if using second hand parts ( volvo scrappy in Basildon, Essex.) or go to eurocarparts.com to see how much a new will cost, also search german swedish french carparts that is a parts suppliers for all car in those catorgories.

Q: How much should it cost to replace brake pads on a 2001 Volvo S40? I think they're disc brakes.?
I think the 2001 Volvo S40 has disc brakes, and without really looking at it a mechanic guessed it would cost 500 bucks to replace the pads on all 4 wheels. Is this about right, or what? Also, is this a one hour job, or a leave the car for a day job?

A: at the dealer i work for brake pads are $150 per axle installed. so you would be looking at $300 plus tax. $500 seems high. a good mechanic that knows volvos should be able to do the jobs in an hour to an hour and a half.

Q: volvo S40,people around dont recommend because of costly mintenance and low reliablity of the car,is that tue?
I intend to buy a new 2008 volvo S40, but people around dont recommend because of costly mintenance and low reliablity of the car,is that tue? it makes me hesitant and thinking of shifting to BMW 3 series or Audi A4, although am falling in love with the S40 when i took it for test drive.

A: THE VOLVO IS A GOOD RELIABLE VEHICLE FOR MAYBE THE FIRST TWO YEARS. THE COST OF MAINTENANCE WILL KILL YOU.

Q: Which hubcentric should be used for my Volvo s40 2006?
I bought 4 wheels medusa, 18", for my S40 2006. After putting them the car began to make nosie and vibrates. I balanced the wheels a couple of times but the noise continues. I read that the hubcentrics eliminates this noise and vibration. Which ones I should use in my Volvo s40 2006?

A: I have a feeling something else is wrong. I put VW aluminum wheels on my Subie, and the hub hole is too big. If the wheel isn't centered with the 5 lug nuts, the center hole really won't make a diff.

Q: Where do you get a 2005 Volvo S40 oil changed?
I just purchased a 2005 Volvo S40. The oil and filter change seem to be a bit more complicated than the standard sedan. I tried looking up the process online but didn't find enough information to feel comfortable trying it. Jiffy Lube promptly told me they can't do it. Is there any place besides the dealers that do this?? Directions or a garage chain that does it would be greatly appreciated. I can remove the dip tray on my own. Thanks

A: go to an independent volvo repair shop. or go to a volvo dealer suggest you stay away from jiffy lube and the like. they arre good for the junky american cars even though the 2005 volvo is just a ford

Q: I am replacing the brake pads on my wife's volvo s40 today and someone told me that the pistons are different
I am replacing the brake pads on my wife's volvo s40 today and someone told me that the pistons are different and operate on a retractable screw system. can I still use a c-clamp to force them back or is there another way? Is there anything else I should know before starting the job?

A: the front calipers are normal and will compress with a "c" clamp. the rear calipers must have the piston[s] rotated in a clockwise direction[facing piston] while pressing them back [light pressure is all that is needed] you can purchase a cheap "cube" tool that has engagement tangs for 6 different style pistons [yours will be one of them] and use a 3/8 drive ratchet and extension to screw in the piston.[lightly pushing down as you turn] note if you use a "c" clamp on these you will ruin them, and render the car unsafe to drive.

Q: Why does the Ford Fusion look like a Volvo S40?
I know that Ford and Volvo are the same company. I have an 08 fusion with "sport apperance" I was just thinking about how it looks similar to a volvo s40. If you notice the high door sills and how the center of the hood and grille stick out. of course the front and rear fascia are different. Are they built on the same platform? Are they designed by the same designers?

A: As far as I know the two are completely different cars top to bottom, inside and out. The similarities in styling details are simply design trends of the time, like the high door sills and grills that protrude farther than the headlights.

Q: how do people rate the Volvo S40 2000 W reg or older?
Is a Volvo S40 better than a Rover 25?

A: i would say the volvo s40 is the better vehicle

Q: installing in dash navigation in a 2003 volvo s40?
Does anyone know if the 2003 volvo s40 is single or double din? And can any in dash nav system fit in its cradle or does it need some sort of adapter? Or can any nav systems fit in dash? Also, would I need to rewire the stereo or could a nav system be patched into the factory one? And any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A: You would have to go aftermarket, volvo offers no nav. system for an s40.

Q: My son wants a bmw 3 convertible, I want him to have a volvo s40? Which one is better?
My son just turned 17, and wants, and needs a car. He got my older son a new car when he turned 17 and i guess we have to get this son one to. He wants a bmw 3 convertible, but i want him to have a nice safe volvo s40. He's extremely into sports and is likely to get drafted into major league baseball next year. I just want him to be safe. What car should i get him? And what is a good teenage car that they would like, and is safe?

A: the bmw is nice , but its probobly going to cost a arm and a leg to insure especilally with a 17 yr old driving it .... the volvo offers a sport version of the s40 called the t5... the mazdaspeed 3 has alot of sport ( also based on the same platform as the s40) other choices ... the VW rabbit ( there is also a awd sport version called the r32).. the mitsubishi evo.. mustang gt, mini cooper, lexus IS , ... these are just a few .. hope some of this helps ....

Q: Volvo S40 Key: I have a 2005 S40 and a 2006 S40. Is it possible to program 1 key to start both cars?
We have 2 S40's. A 2005 S40 T5 and a 2006 S40 2.4L. Its a pain to always be picking up the wrong keys or having to trade keys if we trade cars. Is it physically possible for 2 Volvo's to have the same code ? I just think it would be very convenient to be able to use our keys in either car. I'm asking on here first because I am curious right now but of course I will probably call my Volvo Dealership later. Thanks

A: expensive: the lock's will have to be re coded to physically accept the key of the other car the alarm and remote system[s] can be reprogrammed by your dealer note if the remotes are changed over you will unlock the other car as you unlock yours etc. cheap: you may consider having both sets of keys on each key ring and fileing a notch in one remote and key fob and two notches in the other set [nonvisual identification between each for night time] and a daub of matching touch up paint on each remote and keyfob for their respective cars [presupposing paint schemes arn't identical]
